Emergency Plan

The Emergency Plan at nuclear reactors such as Entergy's failing Indian Point will not work for numerous reasons.

Neither evacuation or sheltering components can be implemented with any level of confidence, let alone success.  This page shows the fatal flaws of the Emergency Plans, and provides links to valuable resources for those forced to endure the risks of living within 50 miles of an aging nuclear reactor.

ALARMING FACT:

NRC has never closed an operating plant against the wishes of the operators of a plant.

  • Flawed Advice About Sirens

Reminder: the sirens are not a signal to evacuate but rather alert the public to tune to their local Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or television station for important information.

Valuable time to get you and your family out of the pathway of harm could be lost if you follow the above reminder.  The NRC knows the emergency plan for Indian Point is flawed, so they want to FORCE citizens to accept Sheltering In Place as the safest alternative during a SIGNIFICANT NUCLEAR EVENT or TERRORIST ATTACK at Indian Point.  Our advice to the General Public...time is life, use it wisely.

A disturbing quote from the NYC Hurricane Emergency Plan study:

"People would stop evacuating simply because they were unable to evacuate."

"The clogging of streets and public transportation facilities and the jamming of evacuation reception centers would be so great and occur so early that the condition would probably remedy itself. People would stop evacuating simply because they were unable to evacuate."

From the same report is this:

"The City advises against car travel during an evacuation. The City will be working hard to keep roads clear, but traffic is unavoidable in any evacuation. Driving will increase your risk of becoming stranded on a roadway during an evacuation."

    Then we have this:

"As was seen in the Hurricane Katrina disaster, disabled, poor, and elderly communities were the least able to successfully evacuate during an emergency. That experience is a powerful warning to New York to assure that evacuation plans provide for the needs of persons with a variety of physical and health limitations."

Lastly, the issue that NRC trys to ignore:

"In any emergency, numbers of people in areas not designated for evacuations by the authorities will evacuate. This phenomenon is known as "self evacuation."

  • FEMA on Nuclear Power Plant Emergency

Local and state governments, federal agencies, and the electric utilities have emergency response plans in the event of a nuclear power plant incident. The plans define two “emergency planning zones.” One zone covers an area within a 10-mile radius of the plant, where it is possible that people could be harmed by direct radiation exposure.
The second zone covers a broader area, usually up to a 50-mile radius from the plant, where radioactive materials could contaminate water supplies, food crops, and livestock.

The potential danger from an accident at a nuclear power plant is exposure to radiation. This exposure could come from the release of radioactive material from the plant into the environment, usually characterized by a plume (cloud-like formation) of radioactive gases and particles. The major hazards to people in the vicinity of the plume are radiation exposure to the body from the cloud and particles deposited on the ground, inhalation of radioactive materials, and ingestion of radioactive materials.

  • FBI Report Finds IP Secure, Recommends Additional Steps...Notice anything missing in the recovery process quote?

    • Coordinate strategies, protocols and first-responder equipment needs to monitor, detect and respond to and mitigate consequences of a possible biological, chemical or radiological terrorist act or threat;
    • Work with State and local agencies as well as private entities, undertake a statewide assessment of the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to terrorist attacks, including nuclear facilities, power plants, telecommunications systems, public roadways, railways, bridges and tunnels, and develop strategies designed to protect them from terrorist attacks; and
    • Develop plans to promote immediate recovery from terrorists attacks to ensure rapid restoration of transportation, utilities, critical communications and information systems as well as to contain and remove hazardous materials that might be used in an attack.

First, the FBI sure is spending a lot of time and resources preparing for an event that the NRC claims is not likely to occur. The big point to notice though is in the third bullet point...notice in the plans to recover there is no mention about the rebuilding of OUR PRIVATE HOMES!
