Nuclear Energy Plant Optimization (NEPO)

The Department of Energy (DOE) established in fiscal year (FY) 2000 the Nuclear Energy Plant Optimization (NEPO) Program to develop and apply new technologies for the Nation's existing nuclear power plants in order to improve plant reliability, availability, and efficiency while maintaining a high level of safety and ensure that current nuclear plants can continue to deliver adequate and affordable energy supplies up to and beyond their initial 40-year license period. Overall, NEPO aims to help increase the average capacity factor of existing U. S. nuclear power plants.  DOE funds research based on a competitive, peer-reviewed R&D selection process.  ORNL has two active NEPO projects.

The NEPO Program was developed based on the Joint DOE-EPRI Strategic Research and Development Plan to Optimize U.S. Nuclear Power Plants, Volume I, dated October 17, 2000.

This strategic plan, prepared in 1999 and revised in 2000, served as the foundation for the first three years of the program. Building on the success of the program to date, the NEPO Program will focus on the following areas in FY 2003:

  • Increases in electrical generation capability from existing nuclear power plants,
  • Continued improvement in average industry capacity factors, and
  • Development of breakthrough technologies to ensure safe, secure long-term operation.
